    GO BIG--Working Large!

    July 25-27, 2025 | Friday-Sunday | 10:30-4:30 | $550

Encaustic painting has beautifully unique properties that sing in larger formats. There are particular issues specific to encaustic that require specific consideration and planning to achieve the full impact with less frustration, cost and pain. I have solved and refined many of my approaches after years of painting in a full range of sizes, subjects and scale.

This workshop is designed for those already comfortable working with encaustic paint who want to elevate their skill level and expand in size. We will be covering the many issues inherent to scaling up and tackle the complications of working large. This workshop will dive deep and will walk you through the multitude of challenges with scaling up to ‘large’ works.

We will explore alternative tools, set-ups and substrates as well as compositional issues, large batch paint prep, ergonomics and alternative media to get the most bang for your efforts.

With a special thanks to R&F handmade paints for the materials support and thier commitment to arts education.

    Workshop SOLD OUT

This workshop invites you to rethink materiality and explore how location-specific materials can deepen your artistic practice. By integrating found and foraged elements into encaustic, you’ll discover how materials carry meaning beyond their physical properties—serving as a bridge between personal narratives, environmental concerns, and cultural histories.

Through this lens, we’ll work with peat ash, peat turf, and holy water from St. Brigid’s Well, materials I foraged during my art residency in Ireland. You’ll experiment with alternative materiality, using paper in diverse ways—from collage to ritual burning, incorporating ash from personal rituals, and employing tearing, burning, and dipping techniques to create layered, textural works.

By engaging with materials rooted in a specific place, you’ll see how they can shape themes of landscape, heritage, sustainability, and personal transformation in your work. This approach challenges you to see materials as more than tools—they become storytellers, weaving together personal and environmental narratives to create art with deeper meaning and connection.
