TEACHING STYLE

Curiosity
Are you ready to learn something new and give yourself time and space to grow an idea or skill? Do you want a fun and supportive environment to explore?
Release your inhibitions and immerse yourself in the creative journey. Join me in a multitude of workshop opportunities; expand on your visual vocabulary, technique skill sets, and art concepts to break new ground in your artistic process.
Although many workshops are technique and material driven, I challenge students to move beyond techniques and invite students to dive deeper and incorporate intentional content, concepts and conversation into their art.

Experimentation and Expertise
Workshops are generally designed to provide students with an opportunity to take risks, make mistakes, ask questions and get help resolving issues encountered.
However, I believe addressing art principles, design concepts and color theory are important to provide a solid foundation for any approach and to elevate work to a new level.
You will be ‘sampling’ processes and practicing techniques to gain proficiency needed to expand your art practice vs focussing on completing a finished product specifically in general workshops.
However, specialty and private-semi private sessions are more project driven based on the students intentions.

Discovery
I work with a full range of students, so whether you feel you are a beginner or an expert there is always something new to learn or discover.
I am a fast- paced teacher by nature, but also give you plenty of time to practice and get one-on-one guidance. I am generous with my resources and expertise so all questions are welcomed and addressed vs sticking to a strict format or curriculum. This makes every class unique based on the students interests and skill level.

Therapeutic Self-Care
“As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I have to make sure to incorporate self-care into my life. Otherwise, I would burn out quickly. Encaustic (hot wax) painting has become one of my favorite therapeutic activities. Painting allows for mindfulness to occur, which leads to contentment.”

Curiosity & Comfort
"I came from Montana to take an encaustic workshop with Kelly. I felt welcomed and at ease as soon as I walked through the door at her beautiful studio. I can recommend without hesitation a session with her. It was kept to a small number of students and tailored to each individual, so every minute I felt I was learning at my skill level. Kelly's teaching style is upbeat, fun, inclusive, and encouraging. I felt like I was taking a class from a friend. She is very open with her knowledge and is excited to see what we'll create. Hopefully I'll be able to take another workshop with her in the future!"

Technical Expertise
“I enjoyed a relaxing and fun afternoon in Kelly’s beautiful new encaustic studio space. She was open and flexible regarding the varying needs and interests of the class. She knew I was particularly interested in figurative work and made sure to address some specific new techniques for me to practice. I particularly liked the demos. The 3 hours flew by under her knowledgeable guidance.”
